Carnival in Mindelo

Each year, Cape Verdeans from the diaspora and tourists flock to Sao Vicente Island for Carnival, a special day filled with vibrant celebrations. Preparations start after New Year's, with locals sourcing fabrics and practicing samba. The highlight of the year, Carnival features lively parades, bold costumes, and inclusive participation regardless of age, sexuality, disability, or race. For an optimal Carnival experience, consider booking a stay at The Casamarel Hotel in the city. With stunning views, amenities, and a prime location, it provides the ideal spot to enjoy the festivities.

Cape Verdeans from the diaspora and tourists from all over the world fill up the island of Sao Vicente for a special day- Carnival. The end of New Years is the start of preparation for Carnival.
People from the island spend their afternoons sourcing for fabric and nights practicing samba. There are many times of the year where there are big celebrations on the island, but Carnival outdoes them all.
Arriving a week before Carnival is highly recommended. On Sundays, locals dance with Mandingas around the island similar to a parade. There are many costume parties throughout the month.
Samba Tropical is a mini Carnival  that is not to be missed and there are other mini Carnivals that are celebrated for professionals and schools.

This year’s carnival began at 9:00 PM on Tuesday, February 15. The parade lasted for about 4 hours. All groups displayed livid bold costumes, enthusiasm, and innovative designed floats. Carnival is unique and special because anyone can participate regardless of age, sexuality, disability, and race.

Searching for a spot on an already crowded sidewalk is daunting. Locals know the ins and outs of viewing Carnival. They lock in their chairs days before to reserve their spot making it almost impossible to find a good location to view the carnival for tourists. If you have children you would need to be well prepared due to carnival being at unexpected times. To avoid these challenges, book a stay at The Casamarel Hotel.

The hotel is located in the city providing you with not only a great view, but a place to lounge, eat, and rest while you wait for Carnival to begin. Our deluxe apartment is fully equipped with a kitchen and a terrace that offers immaculate views of the water and all of the festivities of Carnival.
